From the EBD Teacher
The following stories are from the last 14 years of working with students with the disability of EBD, ASD, and OHD
*This is the longest post I will ever write...stick to it until the end..you won't be DISAPPOINTED*
This is a real story that took place over 10 years ago and everything is true accept all the names of the people involved have been changed to insure ANONYMITY.
If you are a special education teacher you understand that students who RECEIVE special education can sometimes be the most transient percentage of the school population. This is not always the case but in my experience in teaching i have seen it more often in the populations of students that I serve.
One year I was teaching at the middle school level. The school that I was teaching in was located in an AFFLUENT area in the suburbs. At that time the student population was made up of around 85% white students, 8% african american students, and 6% Hispanic Students. The majority of these students lived in single family homes. We had 3-4 apartment COMPLEXES as well as a TRAILER park that was within our attendance area.
The school year started as harmlessly as the last year. Fall turned into the BEGINNING part of winter. I got a knock at my door and the principal asked me to come to the office to meet a transfer student.
I went to the main office to meet the new student and his family. for the sake of privacy we will call him "Tim". I met with Tim's mom and Tim. He was a tall, well built, 12 year old. He was around 5'10 and looked like he was trying to grow his first mustache. We exchanged PLEASANTRIES, and I took Mom and son on a tour of the building.
At this meeting was also our DIVERSITY COORDINATOR Mr. D. Tim was African American and was moving from one of the toughest NEIGHBORHOODS in North minneapolis. Needless to say Tim was in for a little bit of a culture shock.
The next day Tim came to school. His first hour was the social skills class that i taught. He was PLEASANT and funny, but also trying to feel out where he was compared to the other students in his class.
When first lunch came I got a call on the walkie talkie for me to head to the Lunchroom. I ran down as fast as I could. When I got to the lunchroom I saw that Tim was standing on the lunch table yelling "Power to the people!" as loud as he could. As I was walking to the table trying not to smile I saw that every student of ethnicity was sitting at the table with him.
You see, Tim had made every student that wasn't white sit at the lunch table with him. I was about to ask Tim what was going on, but I heard "What the hell?" coming from behind me. I recognized the voice to be that of Mr. D. You see he had also been called to the lunchroom.
So I just let Mr. D take over and talk with Tim. He asked if Tim would go eat lunch with him and Tim agreed. I was about to leave but two girls who had been sitting at the table asked me to come back. They wanted to let me know that during the conversation with the group before Tim had stood up and started yelling. He told everybody at the table that if a girl ever hit him he would "smack that bitch right back". I told them I would let his Assistant Principal know about it.
The next day Tim came to school he had a pretty good morning but as 5th hour was ending he had a incident in ARt. There were two girls In front of him in line ready to leave the room. As all middle school female best friends do they gave each other a hug before leaving class. For whatever reason tim thought this would be a good time to grind on one of the female students and yell out loudly "Three Way!!! Three Way....We doin a three way!!!"
The Female students reported him to the office and he was called down to be interviewed about the situation.
Whenever one of the students on my caseload was interviewed I wanted to be in the room to offer support. Tim didn't deny his actions or what he yelled out loud. He was also asked about the conversation the day before about hitting girls and he stated that he did say those things.
BECAUSE Tim was still new to us and we wanted to see if we could help him transition better we decided to just change his schedule so he wouldn't be in the art class with the two girls and to have his mother come in for a meeting.
Tim's mom agreed to come into school for a meeting. When she got to school she was being followed by a very tiny old white lady. Both Tim's mother and this white lady came into the office and sat down with Tim siting between the two of them.
I wish you all could have seen tim's face. it went from a mixture of BRAVADO and confidence to absolute fear. He IMMEDIATELY looked at the ground and before anyone could say anything he said "Im sorry mam"
Tim's mother responded, "We about to see how sorry you goin to be after this meeting gets done"
The tiny white lady echoed Tim's mother, "Soon as this meeting gets done"
Tim's mother introduced the other woman as a MEMBER of her church who had taken the mother and son into her home as they had fallen on hard times.
The assistant principal stated to the mother what had happened at the end of art class. after she was done tim's mother began to preach at her son.
She said loudly, "Boy i didn't bring you out here to continue your foolishness!"
The little white lady started acting like the choir "MMM stop that foolishness!"
Tim's mother: "You going to loose that new cell phone this weekend"
Little White Lady: "No cell phone for you!"
Tim's Mother: "we were about to get you some new shoes this weekend, You goin be wearin those sorry shoes till summer break now"
Little White Lady: "No new shoes for you!"
Tim's Mother: "you better APOLOGIZE to everyone who you messed with or so help me boy you won't make it to school on Moday cause you goin to be the Er after what I am going to do to you!"
Little White Lady: "You better APOLOGIZE!"
Tim looked up from the ground to the ASSISTANT principal and myself and apologized. We told him that we accepted and started to talk about how we could help Tim to do better starting on monday.
The conversation was about to end but the assistant Principal wanted to let Tim's mother know about the incident that OCCURRED in the lunchroom. She said to Tim's mother. "I just wanted you to know also that Tim used some INAPPROPRIATE language during lunch yesterday. which he admitted to"
Tim's Mother: " What did he say?"
Assistant Principal: "He told other students that if a girl ever hit him he could "smack that Bitch right back"
Tim's mother's head shot directly back at her son.
Fearing for his life Tim yelled, "Momma, Momma!! You said if a girl ever hit me first i could hit her back!!"
Tim's Mother: "Boy I was talkin about girls from the city who carry switches and guns!!! We ain't there anymore!"
